3 Reviews of the XL Outhouse Cotton

By: Saftlad  Reason: I own(ed) one  Made in: 2010   Rating:

Have used this now a couple of times whilst away with the family to keep the cooking away from our main tent. For that, it works well, though as others have said, it does come with a separate groundsheet which I haven't bothered using either.

Good space, and it does seem pretty stable. However.

I'm glad I haven't bought this as a main tent if this is the standard of finish to be expected from Outdoor Revolution. First time out, one of the guy attachment points in the roof separated from the pole sleeve. Not the end of the world. The other end is coming away from the tent itself. Trying to get the cotton centred on the poles isn't the easiest of things, given the 'stickiness' of the materials.

The seam sealant is coming away from all the seams. Again, not a major issue as this is just for cooking in, and with the lack of groundsheet, the seepage just drips onto the ground anyway.

Positives are it's packaway size. It fits nicely into it's own little bag, slightly smaller than a self-inflating mat.

Also the floor space is more than adequate for a cooker & stand, and larder with plenty more space either side for fridge/boxes/bags etc.

Would I buy another one? Not sure tbh. I suspect I'd probably try another make and hope for better build quality/longevity given what I've seen so far.

I have just purchased one of these from JR Leisure (who are excellent).

We haven't used it yet hence the not rated rating.

On first opening it seem a good pice of kit.

It comes in it's own bag which is well made and had handles and adjustable straps and the zip is very long and makes the bag open really wide making it easier to get out and fit back in.

The poles come in a separate drawstring bag of their own - ours had a slit in it but can't be bothered with the hassle of sending it back so will put up with it (and do a repair). Poles are a snug fit in the bag.

The pegs are in a bag of their own too. Just the bog standard wire ones.

It comes with a ground sheet of it's own which is wrapped aroud the main tent.

The tent is cotton, NOT CANVAS, and has a plasticy backing to the material. This make it stick together. You have to carefully unstick it all from itself. It's rather like when the plastic of the paddling pool or arm bands stick to itself (or plastic windows etc).

It's no big deal and took me about 5 mins to unstick it all. I turned it inside out and left it to breath for half an hour. It does smell - a funny sort of felt tip/marker pen type smell so do it somewhere ventilated just in case.

I haven't erected it - it's raining - so again can't comment yet on how easy to put it together.

So far it seems to be a good buy for the £45 we paid for it. Don't know if it'll be all stuck together again when we open it up again.

I'll come back and review it again once it's been used.

After a particularly windy camping trip last year, we decided a kitchen tent was the way forward. I found this one at Somerset Camping for £55 - could have had the polyester version for £50 but decided the fact it included porch poles it was worth the extra £5!

It was a pain to get up the first time as the insides were stuck together. I thought this was a fault but apparently it is supposed to be like it. This is why I've given it 8/10.

Once up, it withstood high winds in Perranporth and proved well worth its money for somewhere dry & safe to prepare and cook food plus store all our equipment. We didn't bother using the separate groundsheet as it looked like a trip hazard.

I forgot to take photos on this trip but will upload some after the next outing. As an idea, it comfortably held a double table with 2 suitcase stoves, a smaller table for food preparation with a crate of food and a large Lidl coolbox.
